George Rice Slagle was born 11 February 1864 in Jefferson, Frederick County, Maryland, the son of Henry Mathias and Catharine Ann Virginia Rice Slagle. He came to Howard County Maryland with his family in 1885. After his mother died he and his younger siblings farmed in Poplar Springs until his brother were married. In about 1910 George went to Columbus, Ohio where he was listed as a factory worker and he lived there until his death on 20 December 1945. His obituary reads (unknown newspaper) "George Rice Slagle,son of the late Henry M. and Catherine A. V. Slagle died in Columbus, Ohio and funeral services were held at the Waltz Funeral Home, Winfield, Md., on Sunday, December 23 at 11 a.m. Interment was in McKendree Cemebery. The pallbearers were Benjamin, Claude, William and Monroe Slagle, Guy Hartsock and Henry Brandenburg. Mr. Slagle was born at Jefferson, Md., and his family later moved near Lisbon. Mr. Slagle has lived in Columbus for 56 years. He was 81 years of age at the time of his death. He is survived by three brothers, Fulton R., and Martin W., of Lisbon and the Rev. Arthur E. Slagle of Baltimore; one sister, Mrs. Hayes Dempsey of Baltimore also survives."
