CARROLLTON – Harles "Charles" Bailey, 78, of Route 1, died Monday in Riverside Hospital, Newport News. A native of Clarksburg, W. Va., he was a retired machinist from Norfolk Naval Shipyard. He was a Presbyterian, but attended Benn's United Methodist Church. He was a life member of the Carrollton Fire Department, a charter member of the Carrollton Ruritan Club, an honorary member of the Isle of Wight Volunteer Rescue Squad, and a member of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Anna B. Bailey; two stepsons, Russell Johnston of Carrollton and Rea Johnston of Smithfield; three sisters, Mrs. Roberta Decker of Odenton, Md., Mrs. Betty Bittinger of Bedford, Pa., and Mrs. Oma Farrell of Mount Lake Parks, Md.; and three step-grandchildren. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in Colonial Funeral Home, Smithfield, by the Rev. Karl Crowe. Burial will be in Old St. Luke's Cemetery. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to the Isle of Wight Volunteer Rescue Squad or the American Cancer Society. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 until 9 tonight.
