Robin John Palmtag died Thursday while backpacking. He was 51.

Mr. Palmtag lived in the Pajaro Valley. He earned a degree in computer science from California Polytechnic State University. Mr. Palmtag was an active member of Toastmasters and the Jaycees, and served on the Santa Cruz County grand jury. He pursued a career in computer and information technology and worked for more than a dozen companies, including CompUSA, DKA, Monterey Bay Online, Fireman's Fund, and IBM. During the 1980s, Mr. Palmtag joined his dad, Charles Palmtag, at Kane-Hall-Palmtag as an insurance broker and later became a partner at the firm. He eventually started his own computer business, User Friendly Systems. For the past several years, Mr. Palmtag served as assistant director of technology for the Pajaro Valley Unified School District. He actively supported his children in their athletic and extracurricular activities. He also enjoyed music, gardening, golfing, water skiing and cars. At the time of his death, Mr. Palmtag was guiding a group of young men from the Santa Cruz Chapter of the International Order of DeMolay.

His family says he was a devoted and supportive father. He also loved music, gardening, fine beer, golfing, water skiing and driving his MG with the Santa Cruz British Motor Car Club.

He was involved with the following organizations: Eagle Scouts, Santa Cruz Chapter Order of DeMolay, Toastmasters, Jaycees, and Santa Cruz County Grand Jury.

Mr. Palmtag is survived by his partner, Susan Perchesky; children, Joel (Kristel) Palmtag, Cecilia (Neale Jones) Palmtag, Michael and Mark Palmtag; stepdaughter, Heather; mother, Bernice Palmtag; and sisters, Karen Palmtag Skillicorn and Chris Palmtag. He was preceded in death by his brother, Tom.

A memorial service will be held to celebrate Mr. Palmtag's life Saturday at 11 a.m. at the United Presbyterian Church, 112 E. Beach St. in Watsonville. Donations may be made to your favorite youth organization. Arrangements are under the care of Mehl's Colonial Chapel.

He was born on September 27, 1956 in Fort Bragg, NC to Charles and Bernice Palmtag. Save for the years he spent at California Polytechnic State University earning his degree in Computer Science, Robin resided in the Pajaro Valley area.
During his youth, Robin earned the rank of Order of the Arrow, Eagle Scout, and served as Master Councilor in DeMolay. During his later years, Robin was an active member of Toastmasters, Jaycees, and served on the Santa Cruz County Grand Jury.
Robin pursued a career in computers and information technology; he loved his "toys". During his career, Robin worked for over a dozen companies including CompUSA, DKA, Monterey Bay Online, Firemans Fund, and IBM.
During the 1980s, Robin joined his dad at Kane-Hall-Palmtag as an insurance broker, later becoming a partner at the firm. He eventually developed and led the effort to bring the company into the computer age. Robin's love of computer technology and his adventurous nature led him to start his own computer business, User Friendly Systems.
For the last several years, he has served as the Assistant Director of Technology for the Pajaro Valley Unified School District. His vast technical expertise and limitless creativity in his field made him an invaluable resource.
Robin was a loving father, and actively supported his children in Cross Country, Track and Field, theatre, and kayaking. He attended every production and competition in which his children were involved. With the help of his sons, he reopened the Santa Cruz Chapter of DeMolay, most recently serving as Chapter Dad. A music lover, Robin went to a dozen concerts a year. His epicurean tastes inspired his gardens, and his love of fine beer brought him to every brewery in the region. He also golfed, water-skied and drove an MG with the Santa Cruz British Motor Car Club.
He is survived by his partner, Susan Perchesky; his children, Joel Kristel Palmtag, Cecilia Neale Jones Palmtag, Michael and Mark Palmtag, Susan's daughter Heather; his mother Bernice Palmtag, and sisters Karen Skillicorn and Chris Palmtag. He was preceded in death by his brother Tom, and father Charles Palmtag.
A memorial service will be held to celebrate Robin's life on Saturday, June 28, 2008 at 11 a.m. at the United Presbyterian Church at 112 East Beach Street, Watsonville, CA 95076. Donations can be made to your favorite youth organization.
