Dreaming to become a sailor, he managed to persuade his parents to allow him to join the school frigate "Conway," however his father insisted that he abandon his hopes to enter the Royal Navy. Returning to Bristol, he wrote a burlesque called "Jason" or "the Golden Fleece" which produced a good impression, and he received commissions while continuing to earn his living working as an accountant until his father's death. While a clerk he had written the words for various songs, adopting the pseudonym 'Hugh Conway' in memory of his days on the training-ship. In 1883 his first long story, "Called Back," became a bestseller and was translated into most European languages. Ordered by his doctor to the Riviera for his lungs, he caught typhoid fever, and died in Monte Carlo. He was buried in the cemetery at Nice.
