William Alhands Linch was 27, and living in Mt. Pleasant, Henry Co., Iowa, when he enlisted as a Private in Co. D of the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Jan 5, 1864. He was mustered into federal service on the same day.

He was mustered out of the service with the rest of his company on Aug 8, 1865, in Atlanta
