Son of Hugh Anderson Cooper and Malinda Amanda (nee Looney) Cooper. On 17 July 1865 in Savoy, Texas he married LaVarah Sephronia Ray (b. 20 August 1844 in Greenwood, Louisianna. d. 29 Oct 1928 Colorado City, Mitchell County, Texas.), daughter of James Wilson Ray and Mary L. Morris Gipson.

Burwell Zacharia Cooper died of blood poisoning from a wound received during the Civil War - injured his leg when he jumped from a moving train's flatcar when it was attacked by the Federals.

Occupation: Gunsmith/Justice of the Peace/Commissioner/Postmaster

The records show that B. Z. Cooper, private, Company A, Regiment 10th Texas Cavalry, Confederate States Army enlisted September 16, 1861 and that he was surrendered at Citronelle, Alabama, May 4, 1865 and was paroled at Meridian, Missouri May 9, 1865.
