Verna Mae was the daughter of Charles and Florence Engler Mutchler. She graduated from Fairview High School in 1938 and was employed as a secretary by the Social Security Administration for ten years and the Hazard Okonite Wire Rope Company, Wilkes-Barre. She was a member of the Pennsylvania Association of Retired State Employees. She served as secretary for the Idetown Compact Bowling League. She was married to Haydn T. Evans, and the couple had one daughter, Lynn.
