John J. Allison, age 96, of Gallipolis, died Wednesday May 14, 2008 at Holzer Medical Center. Mr. Allison was born in a log cabin in Walnut Township, Gallia County on November 11, 1911. He was the son of the late Arthur and Estella Gallagher Allison. John was the sixth of seven children, and was preceded by five brothers, Ray, Elmer, Walter, Foster, and Marshall, and by a sister, Blanche Malone Lutz. John graduated from Cadmus High School in 1932 and earned an Associate Degree from Rio Grande College in 1934 and his Bachelors Degree in Education from Wilmington College in 1939. He taught 14 years in the Gallia County Schools both before and after serving in the United State Army Air Corp from 1942 until 1945 when he was Honorably Discharged. In 1952 he purchased Cameron Electric in Gallipolis. This business became Allison Electric and Furniture, which he operated until his retirement in 1982. He attended Grace United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Gallia County Retired Teachers, a 60 year member of the American legion, and a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was elected to the Gallipolis City Commission in November 1973 and served as president from January 1974 through December 1977. His interests included woodworking, raising a garden and fishing on Lake Erie. He is survived by his wife of more than 73 years, Theresa Muriel Jones Allison, whom he married on December 10, 1934 in Catlettsburg, Kentucky. In 1954 a son was born to the family, John J. Allison II of Columbus. John will be remembered lovingly by other family members, including nieces, nephews, and cousins. Friends may call at the Waugh-Halley-Wood funeral Home on Thursday May 15, 2008 from 5-8 PM. A private service for the family will be held at a later date. Pallbearers will be: Keith Coughenour, Ron Allison, Steve Miller, Tom Lloyd, Richard Mahan, and Jack Mills. Honorary pallbearers will be: Mark, Brett, and Mike Bostic.
