John Andrew Abata, 72, 2533 Station Road, Wesleyville, died Monday, Dec. 8, 1997, at his residence.

He was born in North East, July 13, 1925, son of the late Joseph and Josephine Cuccia Abata.

He had been employed by General Electric Co. for 40 years as an inventory control clerk, retiring in 1985. He was a member of St. James Roman Catholic Church; Carl Neff Post 571, American Legion; the G.E. Quarter Century Club; and the G.E. Retired Employees Association.

Mr. Abata had served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He enjoyed reading, gardening and woodworking.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Juanita Riegard Abata; a sister, Josephine Abata; and four brothers, Frank, Anthony, Vincent and Joseph Abata.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Klep Abata; three sons, Kenneth Abata and his wife, Diana, of Wesleyville, Dennis Abata and his wife, Colleen, of Millcreek, and Daniel Abata and his wife, Jean, of Millcreek; a daughter, Diane Walker of Millcreek; a stepdaughter, Karen Keister of Waterford; a stepson, Ralph Dececco of Summit; three brothers, Sam Abata of North East, Louis Abata of Hayward, Calif., and the Rev. Russell Abata of Westend, N.J.; a sister, Jean Wojtowicz of North East.

Burial will be in Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery.
