Born in Bowling Green, Ohio on the 4th of July, her father had a ticket to the Willard-Dempsey Heavyweight Championship bout in Toledo missed it to witness the birth of his daughter Betsy. Her fraternal grandparents were Fred Hankey and Bertha (Brown) Hankey. Don Brown Hankey was the owner of Hankey Lumber Company

Graduating from BG high school, she attended Bowling Green College (now Bowling Green State University) then transferred to Ohio State University. She majored in Home Economics and graduated in 1941.

She married Elbert Lewis Agnew June 28, 1941 at the home of her Grandparents in Bowling Green, Ohio. Elbert was employed by Middlesex County Extension Agency in Concord, Massachusetts. They lived in a rented house on 10 Lang Street in Concord. On July 1, 1942, their daughter, Carol, was born. As the war was breaking out, Elbert got called back to Boardman, Ohio to help his family grow potatoes for the war. Betsy served as an energetic farm wife. She drove tractors and trucks to help plant and harvest the crops. She canned many tasty fruits and vegetables. She was involved in many activities becoming very active in PTA, American Association of University Women, Daughters of the American Revolution, the
Boardman Methodist Church, Garden Clubs, Book clubs and Bridge clubs. She often hosted the family gatherings and could always be counted on for a winning smile and a helping hand. She was a very gracious lady until she died at St. Mary's Alzheimer Center in 2008.
