Frances was born March 30, 1879, in Warren County, Iowa, to John Henry Hommer and Elizabeth Bald. When she was young and her father was alive, they were only allowed to speak German in the home. After his death in 1891, she spent a lot of time with her aunts around New Hampton, Iowa during the summers. Frances was an excellent needlewoman, having learned the art of dressmaking from a professional sewer in Indianola. Before her marriage, she stayed with families and sewed their clothing for them. After marrying, she enjoyed sewing for her family. She also loved to tat, do fancywork and raise flowers. Frances also raised turkeys for a time and they had a farm produce route in Des Moines. She is especially remembered to her grandchildren for the angel food cakes she baked for their birthdays. Frances was very active in the Ladies Aid group at the Pleasant Hill Church. After the Pleasant Hill Church closed, she became a member of the First Baptist Church in Indianola. She had a wonderful memory, even past the age of 100. She passed away July 22, 1982.
