With his late brother Paul, John started a seafood business maybe in the 1930s or so where they were already established watermen in the Newburg/Popes Creek area. Soon, the crabs and fish they caught along the lower Potomac and Port Tobacco rivers were being shipped via train up to markets in D.C. and beyond. One benefit of programs designed to ease the effects of the 'great depression' was the Rural Electrification Project which brought electricity to rural areas like Charles County. They most likely shipped their wares from the adjacent Popes Creek power plant that had been recently built and had daily service from a coal train. And of course they had a nephew named George W. Robertson who would later buy the Capt. Drinks crab house at Popes Creek and rename it Capt. Billys. Next door to Robertsons place.
