Charles was a former sheriff of Pepin Co, WI. He and his brother Milton while hunting the notorious thieves, Alonzo and Ed Maxwell (aka Alonzo & Ed Williams) were gunned down by the two brothers. The brothers were lynched for their crimes and the murder of at least three lawmen.

Charles brother Milton an under sheriff of Dunn Co, is buried in Menonomie at the Evergreen Cemetery.
