Major Joseph Lawrence Moore

Joseph L Moore was 2nd born of five known children Feb 12, 1842 in Washington county, Pennsylvania. His father Ard "Ned" Moore and mother Sarah Moffatt Lawrence Moore. (both born in Pennsylvania)

He was married 7 June 1877 in St. Louis County, Missouri to Miss Lydia McCluney of St. Louis. She died 9 months later on 28 March 1878

Census: 1880, age 38 Carthage, Jasper county, Missouri boarding on north Main street, a banker.

He was married in 1891 to Mary Morrison of Wheeling, Ohio county, West Virginia. She died in 1896, he remaining a widower balance of his life.

He was into the lumber with brother then foundry business, a mine operator and a banker.

Work of rebuilding the Big Kate mill, which was recently moved from the Kaneland to the Reliance lease at Neck City is about completed and, in all probability will be started up this week. The mill belongs to Maj. J.L. Moore and John McMillan, of Carthage, who recently opened a good face of ore on their sub-lease on the Reliance land.(unknown date)

Census: 1910, age 69 living with brother Robert's 1st born's family (nephew) at 1227 south Main street;

He passed away Jan 27, 1918 at 11 am diagnosed with Cerebral Embolus (stroke) at the age of 75 years, 11 months, and 5 days. His wife preceded him in death.
Dr. R. W. Webster was the attending physician
Burial was at Park Cemetery, Carthage, MO on Jan 29, 1918 under the direction of Knell Undertaking

He was known as Major Moore, born in Washington County, PA. His widowed mother, Sarah Moffatt Lawrence Moore, became a resident and died in Carthage also.

In 1862 he had enlisted in Company G, 140th Pennsylvania Infantry, serving two and a half years. At the battle of Gettysburg he was taken prisoner and was confined at Belle Island three months. After his release he was commissioned captain, then major, serving until the close of the Civil War.
In 1867 he removed to Johnson county, Missouri, where he engaged in farming until 1870 when he came to Carthage and engaged in the lumber business until 1875, when he was chosen cashier of the Carthage Foundry and Machine Company

He ran against Timothy Regan for unexpired term of Carthage's first mayor in 1873, but was defeated.

In 1877 he and D R Goucher bought the Farmer's and Drover's Bank of 341 south Main (later where Carter-Miller then Miller Clothing store was) from its organizer Levi Starr, he its cashier (chief operating officer) and Goucher president, but only devoted a portion of his time to the bank until 1880, when he sold interest in the foundry and devoted his time to banking, bank merged with Carthage National Bank, #4815, later, of 401 south Main southwest corner 4th & Main streets, in the Roessler family built building bought by W S Crane, then in 1920, after serving the public 29 years, that, was merged with 1868 created, Bank of Carthage, now Bank of America.

Younger brother was Robert Moore

Nephew of Hon. George V. Lawrence for forty-five years Republican representative in Congress.
