Donald Duane Tucker, 53, of Sumner, Iowa died Thursday, July 3, 2008, at his home after a courageous battle with cancer.
Don was born September 8, 1954, the son of Wallace and Lovila (Christophersen) Tucker in Rice Lake, Wisconsin. He graduated from Oelwein High School in 1972 and immediately entered the United States Navy, serving until his honorable discharge in 1978. On August 2, 1980, he was united in marriage with Jane Wilwert at St. Patrick's Catholic church in Epworth, Iowa. Don worked for Skyline Harvestore, owned and operated D.J.'s Pizza in Sumner for 17 years, worked at Pattison's in Fayette, and most recently was a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service.
A resident of Sumner for the past 27 years, Don was active within the community and church. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, where he served on the church council, and was presently on the cemetery committee. He was also a member of the Thomas E Woods Post #223, American Legion of Sumner, Commercial Club, Jaycees, and the Big Wapsie Hunter Retriever Club. He enjoyed playing golf, hunting, fishing, weaving rugs on the loom, bowling, gardening, listening to many different kinds of music, and training hunting dogs.
Those thankful for having shared in Don's life include his wife Jane of 27 years of Sumner, two sons, Aaron Tucker of Chicago, Illinois and Ryan (Kayla) Tucker of Denver, Iowa; one daughter, Amy Tucker of Waverly; a grandchild expected in August; one brother, Jason (Marta and their son, Olaf) of Onalaska, Wisconsin; his father, Wallace of Charles city; his mother, Lovila of Waverly. He was preceded in death by his sister, Cindy Tucker; step-father, Jack Hurlbut; grandparents; aunts and uncles; a nephew, James Kuehnle.
A funeral Mass will be held on Monday, July 7, 2008, at 10:30 a.m., at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sumner with Rev. John Purtell officiating. burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Sumner with military rites performed by Thomas E Woods Post #223, American Legion of Sumner, Iowa.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed toward the family for a memorial fund being established for the Sumner City Park.
