Coupe Hits Slow-Going Steel Truck

Manager of Furniture Warehouse On Way Home From Lake White Cottage.

William Merrill Cruit, 46, manager of the Furniture Warehouse Co., 56-60 West Water street, met death instantly at 7:25 p.m. Sunday when his auto slammed into the rear end of a slow moving steel truck as both ascended the Divide on Route 23, south.

The front end of Mr. Cruit's coupe, in which he was traveling alone, ran under the bed of the double bottom trailer, state parolman said, and the driver's chest was crushed by the steering post.

State patrolmen identified the truck driver as Truman Sloan Jr., 27, of Ashland, Ky., an employee of John H. Farson of that city.

Crash Set Airbreaks

Mr. Sloan told patrolmen he was moving up the Divide at 3 or 6 miles an hour. His vehicle carried about 50,000 pounds of steel. He said his first knowledge of the tragedy came when he heard a crash and felt a thud against the rear of his carrier. The impact automatically set the airbrakes.

Both vehicles were on route north, Mr. Cruit returning from Lake White where he had gone to check on the installation of a meter box at his summer place.

The tragedy occurred on a straight stretch that is preceded by curves on the south grade of the Divide. It was the second fatal traffic accident in Ross county this year.

Mr. Cruit's body was removed to the A. M. Gregg funeral home at Waverly, then brought to Were's funeral home here.

Native of Fairfield

Mr. Cruit has been associated with his brother, Harold W. Cruit, East Main street furniture dealer, as manager of the Furniture Warehouse Co. since 1934. He resided at 164 Bridge street. A native of Fairfield county, he was born April 29, 1900, the son of William J. and Mary Williamson Cruit.

He was a graduate of the high school at Westerville, where his family moved when he was a youth, and attended Ohio university, where he was affiliated with Phi Delta Theta fraternity. While in college he enlisted in World War I.

Mr. Cruit was a member of the American Legion, the Masonic bodies, including the Knights Templar and 32nd and 32nd Scottish Rite, and Elks lodge.

Surviving are the wife, Nina Marion Cruit, a son, Delbert, a brother, Harold W. Cruit, all of this city; and four sisters, Mrs. L. M. Collier of Westerville, Mrs. Donald McDermott of Jacksonville, Illl, Miss Florence Cruit of New York City, and Mrs. Donald Williams of Kingston, N. Y.

The Rev. H. B. Weir will officiate at the service to be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday from the Ware funeral home. Burial will be in Otterbein cemetery, Westerville. Friends may call at the funeral home after 6 p.m. Tuesday.
