Eleven servicemen perished when their plane, an LB-30, was homeward bound, after a routine patrol, and crashed on Pinzon Island on 30 Jul 1942. According to a report by the Ground Defense Office, an expedition was sent to the island on 30 and 31 October 1943 and again on 1 Nov 1934. The expeditionary party had a five point mission. Part of that mission was bury the men's remains, mark the graves, and recover personal items.
