Clarance O. "Bill" Becker, formerly of Springfield and former district traffic superintendent for the Bell Telephone Co. here, died at 3:40 a.m. yesterday at the veterans administration hospital at Dwight following a long illness. He was 51 years old.
Mr. Becker was born June 4, 1899, in Springfield, a son of the late Oscar A. Becker and Mrs. Margaret J. Becker. His mother resides at 623 S. Fifth St.
After being graduated from high school Becker enlisted in Co. C of the 130th infantry, Illinois National Guard, which was inducted into the regular army during the first World war. He served for 28 months, 18 of which were overseas. When he was discharged he was serving as a quartermaster sergeant with the 33rd division headquarters. Mr. Becker then took his post with the Bell Telephone Co. here, later being transferred to the Chicago division.
When World war II broke out he enlisted for services and was sent to adjutant general's school at Washington, D.C. He was assigned to McClelland Field in California where he was personnel technician. After completing his service he remained in California where he resided until he became ill and returned to Springfield about two years ago to make his home with his mother.
He was a member of post 32 of the American Legion.
Remains were taken to Bisch Memorial home where services will be held at 3 p.m. tomorrow. Dr. A. Ray Grummon officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. today and until time of services tomorrow.
