Walter's parents were Dr. Lemuel R. McClain and Sarah Emily Burton-McClain, pioneer residents of Cookeville, TN. He married Minnie Avery 3-15-1897.Walter and Minnie had one child, Victor Hugo McClain. Minnie died 3-7-1941 in Cookeville, TN. Later, Walter married Jesse Mae Judd-Bush on 1-13-1945.

Walter received his education in the schools of Cookeville and at Cumberland University, the Southern College of Osteopathy, and the Philadelphia College of Osteopathy. Prior to that he purchased the Gainesboro Press in 1898. He changed the name to the Gainesboro Sentinel, which he published until 1900.

Walter was a prolific writer for osteopathic journals and was the author of a History of Putnam County, published in 1925.
