Walter's parents were Dr. Lemuel R. McClain and Sarah Emily Burton-McClain, pioneer residents of Cookeville, TN. He married Minnie Avery 3-15-1897.Walter and Minnie had one child, Victor Hugo McClain. Minnie died 3-7-1941 in Cookeville, TN. Later, Walter married Jesse Mae Judd-Bush on 1-13-1945.

Prior to that he purchased the Gainesboro Press in 1898. He changed the name to the Gainesboro Sentinel, which he published until 1900.
