FREDERIKA (Special) - Final rites were Monday afternoon at the Methodist church, Frederika, for Mrs. Fred Bergman 84, who died at Allen Memorial hospital, Waterloo, Friday, after an illness of three weeks.
Services were held by Dr. C. H. Petterson and Rev. Gerald McGee with burial in the Alcock cemetery. Casket bearers were Donald Mowatt, Harold Mowatt Jr., Harold Ager, Lyle Bowers, Edgar Bergman and Leroy Bergman.
Bertha Jonston Bergman was born June 3, 1883, in Frederika, the youngest daughter of Alonzo and Ann Aemlia Johnston. She grew to womanhood and received her early education in the Frederika school after which she attended the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls. She later taught in the public schools of the Frederika vicinity.
She was married to Fred Bergman, Dec. 29, 1909 at her home by the Rev. Harry Shirk. They established their home on a farm in Douglas township until retiring to Frederika in 1934. They lived here until 1954 when they moved to Long Beach, Cal., where they lived until April 1 of this year. They arrived in Frederika April 10 to make their home and it was on April 14 when she became ill.
She had been an active community and church worker, being a member of the Methodist church for many years.
Surviving besides her husband are several cousins.
She was preceded by a sister, Viola.
