In 1848 Andrews parents sold out their property in Drammen and Lier, deciding to emigrate to America. Because of sickness in the family, they were detained, and did not leave Norway until April 21, 1853. On that day the family embarked on the sail ship bark "Tegner", which landed in Quebec, Canada, seven seeks later. From Quebec they traveled, by boat and railway to Detroit, MI, Chicago, IL, Milwaukee, WI, and finally to the Muskego settlement in Racine, WI where they stopped for a short time. From there they traveled, by railway and team, to Lansing, IA where they hired a man to take them to Nls Katterud who lived in Springfield township, Winneshiek, Co. . The ticket for transportation across the Atlantic cost $15 for each adult and $8 for each child. For this family the total cost was $80. ($30 for the parents; $30 for two grown children: Celia and Jørgen; and $40 for the five children: Karoline, Andrew, Ingeborg, Johanna and Ole. Total cost, in current value is $2,929.
PRE-ENLISTMENT:
Andrew resided, with his parents, in Section 7 within Frankville Township, 7 miles SE of Decorah, Winneshik, Co. IA. His older brother, George Anderson (Jørgen Linnevold) enlisted a year later, Aug 1862, with the 34th IA, Co. K.
NOTE:
The surname he gave when he enlisted was Anderson. The surname selected by his father because he thought Americans would have difficulty pronouncing the surname, Linnevold. All of the grown children, ultimately choose the surname of LINNEVOLD.
