Death of a Pioneer Resident

Elenor Nelson, daughter of Daniel Nelson, the founder of the city of Nelsonville, was born August 29, 1818; died April 29, 1908, aged 89 years and 8 months.In 1836, she was united in marriage to Ichabod Woodard. To this union was born 6 sons and 4 daughters.He husband died March 16, 1868, 40 years ago; also three sons and two daughters preceded her to the better land. All died in the Christian faith.Mrs Woodard was the last one of her father's family.She joined the United Brethren church when about 14 years old, and after her marriage she, with her husband, joined the ME church.She, with her husband, come to the home whee she died in 1837, built a cabin and began life, when the country was almost a wilderness.Her home for 70 years was a stopping place for ministers and christian people.Sarah Parker, eldest daughter; wife of the late JC Parker, has kindly cared for mother the past two years, also JG and HL Woodard have cared for her faithfully all the years of her widowhood. The records on high will only reveal the sacrifices they have made for mother.The deceased was always a faithful wife and no sacrifice was too great for her to make for the comfort of husband and children.She leaves behind three sons, two daughters and a goodly number of grand and great-grand children, to mourn the loss of a dear mother and grandmother but what is our loss is her gain. She will be waiting on the golden shore until we come.

Elenor Nelson was born August 29, 1818, and died April 29, 1908 She was married to Ichabod Woodard in 1836. To this union was born 10 children, six sons and four daughters. Her husband died march 16, 1868. She joined the United Brethren Church when she was about 14 years old. After marriage, she with her husband, joined the Methodist Episcopal Church. Her husband was class leader nearly all his Christian life. Husband and children all died in the triumph of Christian faith. Her home for 70 years has been a stopping place for ministers and Christian people. She was a faithful, uncomplaining wife, and one of the most devoted, self-sacrificing mothers. She came to the home where she died in 1937. Sarah Parker, oldest daughter, wife of John C Parker, since her husband's death two years ago, has given two years of faithful service caring for her mother. James G and LH Woodard, two of her sons, have been her support and comfort during forty years of widowed life. Three sons and two daughters are left to mourn the loss of a dear mother. Her pastor, HL Sheldon, conducted the funeral service in Morris Chapel, on the New Plymouth charge of which society Mrs Woodard had been a member of for 71 years. Interment was made in the Woodard cemetery near the church.
