Benson was the son of Bernard Baker & Faith Nowell. He was married to Betty Jane Willis and they had one child.
He was a retired assistant vice president of State Automobile Insurance Companies and a Colonel Field Battery in the U.S. Army Reserves(Retired). He was director emeritus, Boys and Girls Club of Columbus and a member of the Press Club of Ohio for 30 years as a cast member in the Gridiron Show; Agonis Club; Old North High Club, class of 1938, OSU Alumni Association Class of 1942; Association of the U.S. Army; Reserve Officers Association of the U.S.; the Retired Officers Association and the American Legion, Veterans of WW-II. He served in the European Theater. Decorations include the Silver Star, Purple Heart and the Meritorious Service Medal.
