Joseph Russell Ridgill, 91, husband of Dorathy Elizabeth Boyd Ridgill, died Saturday, July 5, 2008, in Greenville. Born February 23, 1917, in Manning, he was a son of the late Richard Leslie and Shellie Smoak Ridgill. He was a United States Naval Officer during WWII, and an Engineer with the Air Force in Guam and England. On October 5, 1940 he married his wife of 68 years, Dorathy Boyd of Florence. He was a Physics Major at Furman University and received a Master's Degree in Physics from Vanderbilt University. He did his graduate work at Princeton, Duke and MIT. He was retired from Bell Telephone Laboratories, and was active in the Civitan Club, former president of Electrical Engineers, former president of Biomechanical Engineering and Competitive Analysis Engineering Club. He taught Physics at several universities. Mr. Ridgill was a deacon at First Baptist Church in Winston-Salem for thirty-three years. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Charleston, where he was a member of the Claude Dominey Men's Bible Class.
