After Louisa died, William's son Tom did most of the work around the house and looked after the younger children. Then one day, William stated that he was tired of living that way and was going to find a mother for the children. He saddled his horse and rode off. In about a week he returned riding home with a strange woman mounted behind him. The children ran off into the woods and hid. But she started to cook a good meal and the smell of it soon brought them out again. Her name was Zillah Wells and she made the children a good mother. She bore William three more children (Rachel, Lydia, and Woodson).
William's son Thomas had gotten "Oregon Fever" and William said that if Tom went he was going along. The wagon train included the Allphins, McClains, Bowmans, and others. It included 100 ox teams and a number of loose stock, which were herded along by the young folks who rode on horseback. They left Amazonia, Missouri (north of Saint Joseph) on April 25, 1847 and reached the Willamette Valley on Sept 24, 1847. William Allphin settled Donation Land Claim #220 in Linn County in October of 1847.
William's second wife Zillah died in Linn County Oregon in 1848. After Zillah's death, William married Phoebe Farrier. After Phoebe died, William married again in 1875 to Sarah Burbank.
William Allphin was a member of the first Territorial Legislature in 1851 and served two terms.
