Daniel Leet Oliver, a junior at Yale, class of 1908, was driving home with three buddies from after a Yale-Harvard ball game in the afternoon, and were riding about town all night in the runabout enjoying the sights. He had been following the trolley tracks when he got to the bridge. In trying to get into the roadway again, his car struck the rail and skidded and went into the air. The car flipped and he was pinned underneath. Oliver was the son of James Oliver who died 18 months earlier. James was a prominent steel manufacturer in Pittsburgh. He was also a nephew of George Tener Oliver, proprietor of the Gazette Times and Chronicle-Telegraph of Pittsburgh. It was a family tragedy for a young man with great promise to die in the prime of his life.
