FORT KENT - Damien "Frenchie" or "Chief" Blanchette, 85, husband of Dolores (Ouellette) Blanchette, died peacefully Sept. 17, 2006, at Forest Hill Manor, after a short illness. He was born Dec. 28, 1920, in Eagle Lake, the son of Auguste and Alma (Beaupre) Blanchette. The Blanchette family lived for some time on Red Row, Stockholm, while his father worked on the B&A Railroad. After his mother died, the family split up. Before joining the U.S. Navy, Damien worked in the Conservation Corps from 1938 to 1940 in Belfast. Dolores and Damien were married Jan. 12, 1948, in Fort Kent. They soon left from San Diego, where they lived for seven years while Damien was serving in the U.S. Navy. Here Emery and Lucien were born. Damien was then transferred to Brunswick Naval Air Station where Lorette was born. They returned to Fort Kent in 1963. The family lived on Station Hill with her parents for one year, on Market Street for four years and moved to their present home on Station Hill. Damien retired from the U.S. Navy as a chief commissary stewart after 21 years. After formally retiring from Ouellet's Garage, Fort Kent, where he worked as a partsman and in accounting, he worked as a part-time night security guard at the Northern Maine Medical Center, Fort Kent. He was also a member of the Fleet Reserve, Catholic Order of Foresters and was a third degree of the Knights of Columbus. Dad was famous for his "tree" jokes among his grandchildren. Many will remember him as always having a good word to say about everyone and telling them "have a good day."
Friends may call 10 a.m. Thursday until time of service at Daigle & Nadeau Funeral Home, Fort Kent. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Louis Catholic Church, Fort Kent. Full military graveside services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Maine Veterans' Cemetery, Caribou. After the service at the cemetery, friends and family are invited to Emery and Debbie's house in New Sweden for a luncheon.
