Alfred Earl Archibald of Salem, Oregon, died Tuesday at Albany, Oregon General Hospital.

He was born in Junction City, Oregon, the son of James A. and Mary Elizabeth (Owen) Archibald.
He was one of 15 children and grew up in the Philomath and Corvallis Oregon areas. As a teenager, he served as a volunteer in the Corvallis Fire Department, and graduated from a fireman training program at Corvallis High School

He worked as a station clerk for the Southern Pacific Railroad prior to his career with the Oregon Coast Highway in the early 1920's.

Mr. Archibald married Mildred Gaynel Braaten on June 14, 1926 in Roseburg, Oregon.

During his career, he drove more than 2 million miles while inspecting and coordinating traffic projects.

In 1968, he retired as the sign superintendent of Oregon.

Mr. Archibald was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Corvallis No. 14 AF & AM lodge, and Salem Bodies of Scottish Rite and Amarath.

An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed the wildlife and natural beauty of Oregon. He also enjoyed spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his wife in December 1979, and by 14 brothers and sisters.

Left to cherish his memory are three children: Marilyn Florence Smith of Edmonds, Washington; Lois Elizabeth Dole of Roseburg, Oregon; Alfre Lee Archibald of Albany, Oregon; 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1pm on Friday, December 31 at Fisher Funeral Home, 306 SW Washington, Albany. Interment will take place at Lebanon IOOF Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Oregon Chapter of the American Heart Association.
