John F. Vance, 78, of Cheyenne died March 21 at United Medical Center-West.

He was born Jan. 23, 1927, in Alliance, Neb., to Jay and Hazel Vance.

After graduating from Alliance High School, he joined the Navy and served in World War II. While in the Navy, he attended the U.S. Naval School of Music in Washington, D.C. While there he was honored to play at the funeral of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

He attended Chadron State College and graduated in 1950 with a bachelor's degree in music education. He later received a master's degree from the University of Northern Colorado. He taught music in public schools in Nebraska, Wyoming and Colorado.

Mr. Vance was director of the Wyomingaires, the Barbershop Quartet, First Congregational Church Choir, and he played in the city band.

At the time of his death, he was working part-time at Niemann Music repairing instruments and giving private music lessons.

He is survived by his wife, Nadine Vance of Cheyenne, whom he married Aug. 18, 1947; four daughters, Christine Reinert of North Platte, Neb., Roxane Hall of Bakersfield, Calif., Michelle Robbins of Cheyenne and Marcia Rulon of Pawtuckett, R.I.; six granddaughters; one grandson; and one great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jay and Hazel Vance; and a sister, Esther Moore.

Services will be 2 p.m. today at First Congregational Church with the Rev. J.D. Megason officiating.

Interment will be in Olivet Cemetery,

Pallbearers will be Scott Robbins, Rich Reinert, Gerry Hall, Kellen Rulon, Andy Tatum and Ryan Hayes.

Honorary pallbearers will be the Wyomingaires.

Friends may contribute to the American Heart Association or First Congregational Church.

Services are under the direction of Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes.
