Sylvester was the sixth child of Samuel and Susan "Sukey" Farnham Hosmer. Family story was that he was deaf, due to the measles he had as a child, and used sign language to communicate. He married Lavinia Goodman on 28 Nov. 1839 in Tuscaloosa County, AL. They were the parents of 13 children. He died 4 Nov 1900 in Tuscaloosa and was buried at the Big Hurricane Cemetery, Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
