DR. KLAUS J. SCHULZ, M.D., a longtime resident of OCEAN TOWNSHIP, passed away Thursday, July 10, at the age of 83. Dr. Schulz was a well-known New Jersey Cardiologist who had practiced medicine for over 40 years at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. Born May 23, 1925 in Berlin, Germany, he completed his medical studies at the Free University of Berlin, and immigrated to the United States in 1954. After completing his residency training in Cardiology in Cleveland, Ohio, he accepted a position as a Fellow of Cardiology at Deborah Hospital in Browns Mills, and was naturalized as a U.S. citizen in 1962. He established a private practice as a cardiologist and was appointed as an attending physician in Medicine and Cardiology, Fitkin Hospital (now Jersey Shore University Medical Center) in 1962. During his 40-year career at Jersey Shore, Dr. Schulz played a vital role in the hospital's evolution and advancement towards becoming a nationally known center for excellence in cardiovascular services and treatments. Dr. Schulz was the Founder and Director of the Cardiology Laboratory, and Founder and Director of the Pacemaker Clinic. He also served Jersey Shore Medical Center as both Assistant Chief of Staff, and Chief of Staff, from 1989-1993. In addition to his responsibilities to his patients, Dr. Schulz made a life long commitment to the work of the American Heart Association (AHA), where he served as a volunteer on various Monmouth County, New Jersey Affiliate, and National level activities, committees, and initiatives to educate public citizens, provide advice to public servants, and to assist in the direction of AHA activities at all levels. Dr. Schulz was the recipient of the Howard Dayton Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service, the American Heart Association Lifetime Achievement with the Heart Award, and an award for Lifetime Achievement by Jersey Shore University Medical Center. Dr. Schulz was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Atonement, Asbury Park.

Dr. Schulz is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Joyce Schulz of Manchester; and his four children, a daughter, Heidi and her husband David Bonito of Boston, Mass.; a son, John and his wife Melissa of Atlanta, Ga.; a son, Ted and his wife Heather of Freehold; a son, Chris and his wife Lorrie of Brick. He is also survived by his sister, Syke Perreau of Dijon, France; and seven grandchildren, John, Kristen, Steven, Brian, Makenzie, Jason, and Annika.

Relatives and friends are invited to call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the O'Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Highway 35 at New Bedford Road, Wall. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Atonement, 1st and Heck Avenues, Asbury Park, with the Rev. Jennifer Sweitzer officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Heart Association, 1 Union St., Robbinsville, or the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Atonement, 1st and Heck Aves., Asbury Park, NJ 07712 in memory of Klaus.
