Maud Dutton was the youngest daughter of John Clinton Dutton & Mary Elizabeth Nott. Her first name of Clarissa was after her mother's eldest sister who died young of a severe nosebleed, according to family tradition. Washtubs were filled with bloody cloths before she finally expired from loss of blood.

Maud Dutton married on 9 February 1905 in her father's farmhouse near Alden, Iowa, to George Gibson Cochran (1874-1930), son of John W. Cochran & Louisa Whiteside. 5 sons, all now deceased:
Leonard Cochran (1906-1909), choked on a fishbone he found in the garbage.
Cecil Duane Cochran (1909-
Robert William Cochran (1911-
Clifford Lawrence Cochran (1916-
Walter Earl Cochran (1918-
