Walter was the sixth of nine known children born to Polish immigrants Stanley and Helen Palaszek. He married Joyce Oxford on 25 April 1942 and they had three children during the course of their marriage.

Walter entered the U.S. Army on 24 June 1942 and was a member of Company E, 311th Infantry Regiment, 78th Infantry Division. The Division remained in training until October 1944 when it embarked for the European Theater. By 7 Dec 1944 the Division was attached to the 8th Armored Division in the Hurtgen Forest where the unit incurred heavy casualties during the German offensive now termed the Battle of the Bulge. Walter was seriously wounded during one of those many battles.
