Ann Sheppard(also found as Nancy Ann) was born in Edgecombe Co, NC in 1776, one of 4 known children born to Col. Benjamin Sheppard and his 1st wife, Elizbeth Ruffin. Her paternal grandparents were Col. Abraham Sheppard and Ann Haywood of Bertie Co, (later removed to Dobbs Co.) NC. On her mother's side, she was the paternal grandchild of Sheriff Samuel Riffin & Sarah Lamon McWilliams of Edgecombe County.
At about age 23, she married William Henry Haywood, Jr., son of Col. William Henry Haywood and Charity Hare of "Conecanarie" Plantation in Halifax Co., NC. They were parents to three known children, with both his daughters marrying Governors of NOC:
* Charity Hare Haywood (wife of Gov. Charles Manly, Sr.)
* Elizabeth Haywood (wife of Gov. Edward Bishop Dudley)
* Hon. William H. Haywood, III who married Jane Graham.
Ann's husband passed in 1857, at age 87. She remained a widow another 9 years, passing in 1866 at the advanced age of 90.
