Co. I, 52nd Regt. Mass. Vols
Parents: Justin Hillman & Abigail Taylor
Jerome was recognized as one of the four heroes who warned the villages of the impending flood on 14 May 1874. Jerome had borrowed William Skinner's horse to go from his home in Skinnerville to Haydenville to get the mail. He saw the flood waters coming while returning home. He knew he could not save his family, so he headed back to Haydenville to warn the villagers. He told the church sexton to ring the church bell. When he didn't hear it, he climbed the belfry and rang it himself. He was caught in the church when the flood hit, but managed to wade to safety.
