Jane Bayer Butcher passed away Saturday, July 12 at the age of 92. The beloved mother of John O. Butcher, cherished grandmother of Dana Butcher Rogers and treasured great-grandmother to Caitlin Jane and Tyler John, Jane infused spirit, light and inspiration into the lives of all she came in contact. Born September 25, 1915, Jane Bayer grew up in Indianapolis and attended Indiana University where she met her husband Joseph O. Butcher. A dedicated community volunteer throughout her life, her activities ranged from military distaff services in the Marine Corps and national secretary of the USO Council during her husband's active duty years, to President of the United Way of Monroe County, after Major General Butcher's retirement when they returned "home" to Bloomington. Jane also served on the I.U. Arts and Sciences Alumni Board, I.U., Alumni Association Executive Council and was a life member of the Woodburn Guild Alumni Association. She was a board member of the Local Council of Women, a member of the Bloomington Hospital Foundation, the South Central Public Health Nursing Association, Bloomington Convalescent Center, Bloomington Hospital Advisory Council, the First United Methodist Church and was a member of Delta Delta Delta where she served as chapter and scholarship advisor for the active I.U. chapter, as district president and as president of the local alumnae chapter. She was also a president of Chapter AE of P.E.O.

She received the following honors and awards: Distinguished Alumni Service Award, I.U. Alumni Association, 1988, I.U. College of Arts and Sciences/Graduate School, Outstanding Alumni Award, 1980, I.U. Alumni Association Gertrude Rich Award, 1978, Girls Club of Monroe County, Honorary Member of Rotary and a Paul Harris Fellow, Woman of the Year, 1978, Navy Relief Society meritorious service award, USO First Special Award from the national council, Meritorious Service Award from the USO Board of Governors, Girl Scouts Thanks Badge, 1937 and the Exchange Club "Book of Golden Deeds" award in 1990.
