SOUTH ASHBURNHAM KILLED IN PACIFIC AREA

SOUTHASHBURNHAM - Dec 23 - P.F.C. Paul Andrew Taylor, U.S. Marine Corps., 20 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Taylor and a graduate of Fitchburg High School has been killed in action in the Pacific area, according to the Navy Department Telegram received by his parents. No detail of when or where he was killed was given.
Pfc Taylor was a cousin of Thomas Duval, also of this town who was recently reported killed in action in the Navy.

Taylor enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on Sept 14, 1942 and received his basic training at Parris Island, SC. He was later stationed at New River, NC, and San Diego, CA and went overseas last December.

He was born here July 26, 1923, and attended local grade schools, he graduated Fitchburg High School in 1941.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sister Mrs. Omar (Loretta) Caouette of this town.

Military Mass for PFC Taylor

SOUTH ASHBURNHAM - January 17th - A solemn high memorial Mass for PFC Paul Andrew Taylor of the U.S. Marine Corps., son of Mrs.and Mrs. Thomas Taylor, who was killed in action November 22, 1943 in the South Pacific Theatre, was held Saturday morning in St. Anne's Church. Rev. Thomas F. Mullahy celebrated the Mass assisted by Rev. John J. Foley of Gardner and Rev. Edmund P. Healy of South Ashburnham. Music of the Mass was sung by Mr. and Mrs. George Hanks of Ashburnham, with Edgar LaFreniere, organist.

Full military honors were accorded and the local company, MSG and Ashburnham Post A.L. attended. Cpl. Gordon C. Manthorn of the state guard unit was in charge of the firing squad and Wilfred Roy, bugler, sounded "taps". Captain Arthur Jardin of Co. 12, MSG of which PFC Taylor was a member before entering active service presented his parents with the Massachusetts State Guard Service Ribbon, and also in behalf of the company presented them with the American Flag used in the service.

PFC Taylor enclsted in the Marine Corps Sept 14, 1942. He received his basic training at Parris Island, SC and he was later stationed at New River, NC and San Diego, CA. He went overseas in December 1942. (His parents never saw him in uniform.)
He was born in Ashburnham and attended the elementary schools in the town. He graduated from Fitchburg High School in 1941.

He leaves his parents and his sister, Mrs. Omer Caouette of South Ashburnham. He was the cousin of Pvt. Thomas W. Duval of this town who was killed in Italy on October 26, 1943.
(Paul was first buried on Bougainville, but his body was returned to the US in 1948, and he was buried in Calvary Cemetery, Winchendon, Mass., where his family rests.)

NOTE: 69 years after Paul was killed in action on Bougainville, Paul's 1st cousin, Neil Bouchard, was contacted by a friend and fellow Marine of Paul's, Mr. Jos. Goddard, who had actually seen Paul get struck in the neck by a sniper's bullet, dying instantly. Mr. Goddard explained a lot about this battle, and enclosed a photo of five Marines of the 3rd Marine Corps, 3rd Division, plodding through a swampy area of the jungle. Paul was in the photo.
