Madeline was the daughter of Major and Matilda (May) Sartin who lived in Sartinville in what was then, Pike County. She married Jacob Monroe Smith on June 15, 1856. They were the parents of eight children: George Monroe; John Whitman "Whitney"; William Obed; Mary Jane Josephine; James Madison; Nora Louise; Nalty; and another son believed to have been named Leander Lee Smith who died as a baby.

I was told her grave was originally marked with a wooden marker but it has since disappeared. She is buried in the row in from of her parents.
