Nevada native daughter, Mae Morrison McGowan, has joined the two loves of her life, husbands Gibson "Buzz" Morrison and Wilson McGowan, when she died at home on February 23, 2007.

Mrs. McGowan was born Mae Nevada Martin on October 19, 1906 in Yerington, to George William Martin (born in Mason Valley in 1879) and Alice Farrell Martin (born in Wabuska in 1881). In 1924 Mae graduated from Yerington High School where she performed in school plays and was a member of the girl's basketball team.

After graduating, she worked at Bell Telephone in Reno where, in 1930, she met and married aviator Gibson "Buzz" Morrison, who was killed in an airplane crash in 1935.

Since the 1940s, Mrs. McGowan has been an active member and supporter of the Republican Party. She served as secretary to the Nevada State and Washoe County Republican Parties during the early 1950s. From 1951 1957 Mae worked in the office of Governor Charles Russell serving as an Executive Assistant to the Governor for one year. From then until retirement in 1979, she worked at the Justice Court in Reno for Judge William R. Beamer.

In 1980, she married former Nevada State Controller, State Senator and high school friend, Wilson McGowan. His dedicated political activism was an inspiration to many friends and family.

When her husband, Wilson, passed away her daughter asked her to come and live with her in California. Mae refused, saying she couldn't deal with the liberal politics and she loved Nevada.

She was preceded in death by stepdaughter, Molly Torvik.

She leaves behind two loving daughters: Barbara Morrison Jackson, of Forestville, CA, and Donna McGowan Dericco, of Fallon, NV; sons-in-law: Don Jackson, of Forestville, Jim Torvik and Elmo Dericco, of Fallon; sister-in-law, Kate Buchanan, of Carson City; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

We will all greatly miss her smile, wit and fire.

A funeral serivce will be held on Saturday, March 3 at noon at FitzHenry's Funeral Home, followed by interment at Masonic Memorial Gardens in Reno.

Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Shriner's Hospital for Children, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607-1460.

FitzHenry's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
