The oldest child of Bernard and Tamer Swett, Briody, she was born in Oregon City, Oregon on March 4, 1867. Catholic baptismal records show her name as Sarah Catherine. In her 1882 marriage license application, she is listed as Sarah K. Briody. She married John W. Nails in Astoria at the home of Theodore Bromser. She was known as Kate and was the mother of six known children: Andrew, Rosie, Mabel, John, Nellie, and Ruth. She stated that a child (name unknown) had died before the 1900 census. In 1900, she was with her family in Puyallup. She and John soon moved to Ellensburg to be near her sister, Maria Stickney. Her daughter Rosie died in Kelso the day before she did. Kate died in Ellensburg in 1907 of breast cancer of six months duration. She is buried in IOOF Cemetery in Ellensburg next to her husband, who died the following year. Funeral from the family residence Saturday at 1 p.m. Mrs. Nails was a sister of Mrs. E. E. Stickney, who lived nearby. Rev. Walter A. Hitchcock will deliver the funeral sermon.
