obituary: Bertha H. Besaw, 65, died at Ellensburg hospital Saturday. Born Oct. 28, 1905 in Ellensburg, married Harvey Besaw in 1925 in Tacoma. She was employed by Dixon Jewelry store and more recently by J and J Jewelers until her recent illness. Made her home at 914 E. Capitol. A member of the Christian Church, Pythian Sisters and Eagles Auxiliary. She is survived by her husband, two sons-William and Dale, both of Seattle; eight grandchildren, a brother Fred Stickney, Puyallup and three sisters-Mrs. Effie Kinkaide and Mrs. Mabel Grimm both of Puyallup and Mrs. Eva Churchill, Snohomish. Funeral at Evenson Chapel, Tuesday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Ed Leggitt officiating with entombment at IOOF Mausoleum. Family suggests memorials to Cancer Fund, in care of Mrs. K. J. Larimer, 209 E. Capitol Ave."

William above was considered a second son by Bertha and Harvey; however, was not a relation. Bertha and Harvey's first child was a daughter named Evelyn Leona, born in 1926. She died of pneumonia at the age of seven months while they were in Selleck, a sawmill town north of Enumclaw. In 1928, son Elmer Dale was born in Ellensburg.

Bertha's sister Mable wrote to Vera Williams and recalled that if it wasn't for Vera's grandmother, Julia (Swett) Potter, "Bertha would have died when she was a few days old. Elmer and Maria both had typhoid fever when their daughter was born and they could not find any food to agree with her-so Aunt Julia came and took her home with her. She had Uncle Jim run the cow up by the back door and every time Bertha cried, they went out and milked the bottle full of new milk and made her live."
