He was a retired West Side farmer and had farmed there until 1939, when the family moved to Ellensburg. He died suddenly from a heart attack. Survivors included his wife, eight children, six grandchildren, and five brothers and a sister. Funeral services were held at the Honeycutt chapel. The Spanish American War Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars were to assist in the service with burial in the IOOF Cemetery in Ellensburg.

Letters written during the Spanish American War to his family included accounts of his transport ship's survival of a typhoon, where he indicated that the ship was listing 43 degrees for 50 seconds. He also told of his company's campaigns in the Philippines.
