Journalist and author. He was the first american journalist visited the modern China. In his book "Red Star Over China" (1937) he reported his meetings with chinese political leader Mao Zedong. The book was translated into many languages and Mao became popular in the hole world. In his later reports he shows a clear sympathy for the policy of the People's Republic of China. In 1971 he was invited, on advising of the CIA, to prepare the visit Richard Nixons in Beijing.
After his death, his ashes were divided into two parts, one of which was buried near the Hudson River and the other scattered at Beijing University. His gravestone is on the campus of the Beijing-University.
