Virginia Hughes Hains and her estranged husband, Harold Hains, were killed in a twin engine Lockheed PV-2 aircraft, approaching the Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport, caught fire and crashed into three residential homes. The crash caught one of the homes on fire and killed a two-year-old boy. Witnesses of the 3:00 p.m. crash stated that they saw smoke and flames coming from the aircraft as it approached the airport. The plane veered off its intended route to land and crashed into the homes.

As a child at Columbia Elementary school, Virginia served as crossing guard. She grew up in a house on Jackson Street in Columbia directly across the street from the fire station.

Virginia, age 28, left behind her parents, three sisters, a brother and a daughter.

She and her husband were in the mist of being divorced, and it surprised her family that they were together that day traveling from Tucson to Phoenix. Her husband's remains were taken to San Francisco.
