Death of Andrew Peffer
Andrew Peffer died at his home at this place, Tuesday evening, Aug. 21, 1900 at the age of 82 years. Funeral services were held at his late residence on the 23d inst., conducted by Rev. Miller, pastor of the Evangelical Church at Marchand, assisted by Rev. John Frampton, after which the remains were taken to the cemetery at Covode. Mr. Peffer was born in Germany and came to this country with his parents when he was a boy about 11 years of age, They landed at Baltimore, and from thence they went to Allegheny county, Pa., traveling all the way in a wagon or afoot, the stronger members of the party taking turns in walking. They first settled in Butler county, however, but a few years sufficed a sojourn there and Andrew’s father moved to Indiana county, locating and establishing a farm, or several farms, near Covode, the Peffer farms being well known land marks for their thrifty appearance and productiveness of soil. Andrew, however, remained in Butler county until at a marriagable age he took untin himself a wife in the person of Elizabeth Phillips. That was 59 years ago. Shortly after their marriage they moved to one of his father’s farms where the couple lived till about nine years ago when they moved to Punxatawney. his wife, who is quite feeble survives him, together with two sons, Henry and George. William, who taught school at this place many years, and who died in Kansas, was a son of Andrew Peffer’s. The subject of this sketch was a life-long member of the Evangelical Church and was a thoughtful, earnest christian, and upright and honest citizen. He had the esteem and respect of all who knew him. Truly a good man has gone to his reward.
