DEATH ANNOUNCEMENT - Death of Charles B. Rich
"Another well-known and generally esteemed former citizen of Batavia is dead. Charles B. Rich, so long a resident of Batavia, and for some years a resident of Akron, Erie County, died on Monday evening. From all we can learn of this melancholy occurrence, the circumstances connected with his death are these: On the evening of his death, after tea he went to fulfill a business engagement a mile or two from his residence, riding in a sulky. On his return, when part way home, he passed a friend without noticing him. The horse seemed to go as he pleased, instead of being guided by Mr. Rich. As soon as he passed, the neighbor saw that he did not sit steadily in his sulky, but that his head and shoulders were swaying right and left. The horse in the meantime came nearly to a standstill ; when immediately Mr. Rich pitched forward out of the sulky, striking upon his forehead, inflicting a bad wound. The friend at once raised his head from the ground, when he breathed once or twice, and died. Death was not caused by the fall, it is supposed, but from a fit of epilepsy, to which he had before been subject, he having two previously. His age was 61 years and 10 months."
