He was a peacetime veteran of the United States Marine Corps. He was retired from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Capital Police Department as a police officer; he was currently working as a Dauphin County Sheriffs Deputy at the Dauphin County Courthouse.
He was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church, Enola and the Mechanicsburg American Legion.
Emerson enjoyed golfing, spending time with his grandchildren and was an avid New York Yankees baseball fan.
Surviving are his wife Susan K. Bennett, a son Mathew Bennett, Sr. and his wife Andrea of Lykens, a daughter Stacy Masters and her husband Brian of Middletown, 3 stepsons; Tom Witmer of Enola, Todd Witmer of Hummelstown, Troy Witmer of Harrisburg, 5 grandchildren; Mathew, Jr., Alexandrea, Tristan, Cole and Collin.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 24, 2008 in the Hetrick Funeral Home, 3125 Walnut Street, Susquehanna Town -ship, with Rev. Joseph S. Gentilman officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Lower Paxton Township. Viewing will be from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 23, 2008 and from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 24, 2008 in the funeral home.
