ABSTRACT: Fern Smith Buffum was born near the town of La Fayette, Ill., the daughter of Austin and Sarah (McNaught) Smith. She completed her education at Knox College, Galesburg, Ill., where she majored in music and English. In 1893 she married Charles Abel Buffum, also of La Fayette, and in 1904, with their three children, Harry Buffum, Thurlyne (now Mrs. H.E. Waite), and Dorothy (Mrs. Norman Chandler), they moved to Long Beach. She was outstandingly prominent in cultural movements in Long Beach, particularly in her sponsorship of musical and educational activities. At one time she was a director of the YWCA, and vice-president and director of the Buffums' Department Store after the death of her husband. In addition to her three children she leaves six grandchildren: Richard D. Buffum, Charles C. Buffum, Mrs. Dorothy Waite Still, Mrs. Nancy Waite Ward, Mrs. Camilla Chandler Spear and Otis Chandler, and 17 great-grandchildren.
