A member of the family known as "the Fighting McCooks", He was educated at Jefferson College, studied medicine with his uncle, Dr. George McCook, and became a physician. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War as Surgeon of the 31st Illinois Infantry with the rank of Major. He was wounded in the Vicksburg campaign and was present during Sherman's March to the Sea. Latimer McCook's death occurred just a few years after the end of the war, and was attributed to the lasting effects of wounds, exposure to the elements, and other privations of military life.
