Mooney, Samuel Edgar, 97, "Moondog" or "Amazin' Sam" died peacefully in his sleep Tuesday morning, July 22, 2008. A man for all seasons, Sam had a lifelong love affair with golf and music. As a young man, Sam was a nightclub entertainer and sang with his sister, Ruth Gibson and Grace Shannon in a trio with Barney Rapp's Big Band. After enlisting in the U.S. Army, Sam served in the Carribean prior to World War II. After the war, Sam held a variety of jobs from modeling clothing to working as a stevedore. Sam played golf throughout his life, and became a golf professional at age 57. His last job, which he left in April, 2008, was as a "Divitologist" and Superintendent of the Driving Range at Crane Lakes Golf and Country Club. Sam was most proud of the hole-in-one he shot on February 11, 2003 shortly before his 92nd birthday. He is survived by his companion and former spouse, Charlotte Mooney; daughter, Janice Smith of Santa Ana, CA; sister, Ruth Gibson of Palm Desert, CA; and many nieces and nephews. Sam was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Long, and his third wife, Grace Shannon. A Celebration of Sam's life will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturday, July 26th at Crane Lakes Golf and Country Club in the Clubhouse Ballroom, 1850 Crane Lakes Blvd., Port Orange. Memorial donations can be made in Sam's memory to Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129, who provided loving care in his last days.
